In 1995, both Cowanda and Randy Bazile joined the U.S. Navy traveling not only across the country, but to Iraq and Afghanistan as well. During their service, the Baziles each received numerous awards and letters of recognition for consistently going above and beyond the call of duty. It is this sense of purpose that will help them as they embark on the next journey of their lives — owning their own Express Employment Professionals office in Jacksonville, N.C.
The Baziles always dreamed of owning their own business after retiring from the Navy, and with retirement quickly approaching, they found themselves completing an application with a franchise finder.
“We knew we wanted to find an opportunity that aligned with our values,” Cowanda said. “Faith is really important, as well as helping people.”
After considering a few other industries, it was suggested they look at Express.
“It was right up our alley with helping people,” Cowanda said. “It is faith based and they recognize associates. My past experiences never really recognized people, so it is important to me to provide recognition.”
The Express business model cemented Cowanda and Randy’s decision of which route to take to own their own business.
“Everything is in place. We just have to follow the system,” Cowanda said. “It is much easier to follow a system than starting from the ground up. Express is already established and doing things the right way.”
The Bazile’s military background taught them to commit to the process. As they open their office, the commitment to the Express system will put them on the path to success. They must have courage to step out and take risks. Everything else will follow. And, as Cowanda said, they must have honor, which to her means doing the right thing each and every day.
Most importantly, Cowanda and Randy want to remember why they are doing what they are doing. As they said, it is to bring hope, help the community, and build people up.
With Jacksonville, N.C., home to three military bases and their military background, Cowanda and Randy are looking forward to the opportunity to help veterans, as well as those who are relocating because their spouse is on active duty stationed at a local base.
“We understand the military life,” Cowanda said. “We want to help spouses build their resume and skill set. It is also such a privilege and honor to work with veterans and serve them.”
Before retiring in 2015, Cowanda served as a Department of the Navy Pharmacy Supervisor. Randy currently serves as Lead Chief of an Infantry Regiment with over 200 sailors under his charge and will retire in 2019.
When away from work, the Baziles enjoy spending time with their two daughters who are 6 and 20, by doing things such as bowling, skating, and traveling. The family makes faith a priority and are active in the church. Cowanda and her older daughter recently went on a 10-day missionary trip to the Philippines to provide medical and dental services to the residents. The Baziles are also active participants in the Jacksonville-Onslow Chamber of Commerce and its Minority Small Business committee.
